Atletico Madrid have opened negotiations with Getafe for Nigerian midfielder Chrisantus Uche, as competition heats up for one of La Liga’s breakout stars, Footynaija.com reports.

The 22-year-old, who joined Getafe last summer from Spanish third-tier side Ceuta for just €500,000 (approx. ₦897 million), enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign in the top flight.

Uche announced himself in style, scoring on the opening day of the season against Athletic Club at San Mamés, and quickly became a fixture in José Bordalás’ side.

Initially deployed as a defensive midfielder, he adapted superbly to more advanced roles, including second striker, impressing with his strength, vision, and work ethic.

According to Football-Espana, Atletico Madrid view Uche as a strong fit for Diego Simeone’s system and have initiated talks, although they are unwilling to meet Getafe’s €25m (approx. ₦44 billion) release clause.

The Rojiblancos reportedly value him closer to €15m, setting up a potential negotiation battle in the weeks ahead.

Premier League clubs are also circling. Scouts from Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Brentford have all monitored the Nigerian closely in recent matches. Chelsea were previously linked, though their interest appears to have cooled.

Uche, who has just received his first senior call-up to the Nigerian national team, is believed to be keen on a move this summer. He has reportedly asked Getafe to consider offers that reflect his rapid development and rising stock.
