Nigeria’s preparations for next week’s friendly against Portugal have gathered momentum with Alex Iwobi finally linking up with the Super Eagles squad in Lisbon, Footynaija reports.
The Fulham midfielder missed Nigeria’s entertaining 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw, where Eric Chelle’s side twice moved in front before conceding a stoppage-time equaliser. His arrival now gives the coach an experienced midfield option as the team gears up for what is expected to be one of its toughest tests of the year.
Iwobi’s return comes at an important moment in his international career. The former Arsenal midfielder has made 99 appearances for Nigeria and is now one match away from becoming only the fourth player to reach 100 caps for the Super Eagles, following the achievements of Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.
There had been suggestions that his absence in Warsaw was connected to the dismissal he received during Nigeria’s March friendly against Jordan. However, the 30-year-old has now joined the squad and is expected to be available for the meeting with Portugal on June 10.
Chelle has also strengthened his defensive options by handing a late invitation to Racing Genk youngster Christian Akpan. The 21-year-old defender, who recently broke into Genk’s senior side, has already arrived in Portugal and could provide cover in several positions across the back line and midfield.
Nigeria travelled to Lisbon without Pisa forward Rafiu Durosinmi, who was excused from the trip to attend to personal matters amid uncertainty surrounding his club future after Pisa’s relegation from Serie A.
The Super Eagles could receive another welcome addition before the game, with Samuel Chukwueze expected to report to camp on Friday. Nigeria will be hoping to reverse memories of their last meeting with Portugal, a contest the Europeans won 4-0 four years ago.
