Cardiff City’s T-Jay Chibuzo Okoli-Parfitt is quickly becoming a name Super Eagles fans should remember, Footynaija reports.
The 18-year-old defender, who recently signed his first professional contract with the Welsh club, could soon draw comparisons with Calvin Bassey because of his Nigerian heritage, versatility and powerful style of defending.
Parfitt has spent years developing through the Welsh club’s academy after joining at Under-11 level before earning promotion to the Under-21 side and training with the first team.
A major step in his career came in October 2025 when he made his senior debut for Cardiff City in a Vertu Trophy match against Newport County. His progress was rewarded with his first professional contract, showing the club’s confidence in his future.
Although Parfitt has already represented Wales at Under-17 level during the UEFA European Under-17 qualifying campaign, FIFA rules still allow him to change his senior international team because he has not played a competitive senior match.

Parfitt’s story has many similarities to Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey. Like Bassey, Parfitt has Nigerian family roots despite growing up in Britain. His middle name, Chibuzo, and the surname Okoli point to his Nigerian heritage, while his hyphenated name combines both sides of his family.
The comparison also extends to his style of play. Parfitt is comfortable both as a centre-back and a left-back, the same positions where Bassey has built his reputation for both club and country.
Coaches at Cardiff City rate him highly because of his strength, speed, recovery runs and ability to play the ball out from defence. Those qualities have become trademarks of Bassey’s game with Nigeria.
A senior invitation from the Super Eagles would give Parfitt a chance to follow the same route Bassey took by committing his international future to Nigeria despite having European football options.
With Nigeria continuing to search for young defenders capable of strengthening the national team for future Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup campaigns, Parfitt’s name could become one to watch in the coming years.
