Galatasaray’s pursuit of certainty over Victor Osimhen’s long-term future has taken a new shape, and the latest signal goes beyond mere transfer talk, Footynaija.com reports.
According to Turkish journalist Levent Tüzemen, the Nigerian striker is set to be named Galatasaray’s first captain heading into the new season, a move that would represent the clearest statement yet of the club’s intention to build around him for years to come.
Osimhen contributed to 30 goals across 33 appearances for Galatasaray last season, directly involved in 22 goals and eight assists, performances that have placed him on the radar of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Arsenal and Chelsea.
With interest of that magnitude circling, most clubs would brace for an exit. Galatasaray have instead chosen to dig in.
Club president Dursun Özbek has already made his position public, telling Tüzemen that Osimhen is not for sale regardless of any offer that arrives, with the club’s stated ambition to challenge for a 27th league title and push toward the latter stages of the Champions League.
Özbek has reinforced that stance on separate occasions, describing Osimhen as a world-class player who is happy in Istanbul and stating plainly that there is no intention of letting him leave.
Handing him the captaincy takes that commitment a step further. It is not simply a financial decision to keep hold of a prized asset; it places Osimhen at the symbolic centre of the club’s leadership structure, a role typically reserved for players the management sees as central to its identity rather than passing through on their way to a bigger move.
Osimhen signed a permanent four-year contract with Galatasaray last July following a club-record fee of €75 million paid to Napoli, tying him to the Istanbul giants until the end of the 2028-29 season.
Osimhen himself has stopped short of ruling anything out regarding his long-term future, saying he is happy at Galatasaray while acknowledging nobody knows what comes next. The captaincy, if confirmed, would not close that door entirely, but it does suggest Galatasaray are doing everything within their power to make leaving as difficult a decision as possible.
