Alex Iwobi insists that he has no regrets over his decision to represent Nigeria over England at senior international level as he closes in on a 100th appearance for the Super Eagles, Footynaija.com reports.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria before relocating to Europe and growing up in Newham, London, Iwobi initially represented the Three Lions of England at youth international level before committing his senior career to the Super Eagles in 2015.

Since then, the versatile Fulham star has made 99 appearances for the three-time African champions including outings at four Africa Cup of Nations finals and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Super Eagles will face off against Portugal in a couple of days, presenting the perfect occasion for Iwobi to make a landmark 100th appearance for the national team. Speaking ahead of the match, Iwobi expressed pride as he reflected on his Super Eagles journey.

Alex Iwobi reflects on Super Eagles career

“I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white,” the former England U16 star told NFF’s official website. “I’m grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I’ve no regrets choosing Nigeria.

“I first went to the Nigeria U23 team camp and felt at home. I had represented England at youth level but always felt Nigeria was home. My father always told me to go out there and enjoy my football, and make the decision that I felt was good for me. He was part of the decision but he didn’t force it down on me.

“After 10 years and eight months, I won’t say I am a legend; I only see myself as a Super Eagles’ player. It feels great to be looking at a 100th cap, and on a lighter note, I wish I can add another 100 caps. I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles.”

Nigeria will clash with Portugal on Wednesday, June 10 at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. Kick off is set for 8:45PM.
