The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on Portugal in an international friendly at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday night, with Eric Chelle’s side facing arguably their toughest test of the June international window, Footynaija.com reports.
While the fixture serves as Portugal’s final preparation match before heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria arrive with different objectives after narrowly missing out on qualification for the global showpiece.
The Selecao enter the contest as reigning UEFA Nations League champions and one of the favourites to make a deep run in North America, while the Super Eagles will be looking to measure themselves against elite opposition and continue the encouraging progress shown under Chelle.
Despite the disparity in circumstances, Wednesday’s encounter promises to be an entertaining battle between two talented sides boasting quality across the pitch.
Recent form

Portugal head into the fixture in impressive shape. Roberto Martinez has guided the European giants to 29 victories in his first 39 matches in charge and continues to benefit from one of the deepest squads in international football.
The Selecao defeated Chile 2-1 in their most recent outing, with Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes getting on the scoresheet. Prior to that, they recorded a 2-0 win over the United States and played out a goalless draw against Mexico.
The return of Paris Saint-Germain quartet Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos has further strengthened an already formidable group ahead of the World Cup.
Nigeria, meanwhile, have produced several positive performances despite the absence of some key stars. The Super Eagles held Poland to a 2-2 draw in Warsaw after goals from Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu, having previously recorded victories over Jamaica and Zimbabwe.
Chelle’s men have looked more organised and aggressive without the ball in recent matches, but Portugal will present a significantly greater challenge than anything they have faced during this international break.
History and head-to-head

Wednesday’s clash will be only the second senior meeting between both nations.
Their first encounter came in November 2022 when Portugal ran out convincing winners in a World Cup warm-up fixture. The Super Eagles created opportunities of their own and were handed a late chance to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot, but Emmanuel Dennis failed to convert before the Portuguese added two more goals late on.
Nigeria will be eager to produce a much stronger showing this time around and secure a positive result against one of Europe’s heavyweight nations.
Team news

Nigeria will be without several notable names for the trip to Leiria.
Leading striker Victor Osimhen is absent for this one, while Ademola Lookman is also unavailable. Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu misses out through injury and Rafiu Durosinmi has left camp for personal reasons.
Nevertheless, Chelle still has plenty of experience available, with the likes of Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Calvin Bassey and Maduka Okoye all expected to play important roles.
Portugal have very few selection concerns heading into the game. Matheus Nunes has recovered from illness and returned to training, while Champions League winners Mendes, Vitinha, Neves and Ramos are all available.
The only major absentee is Rafael Leao, who serves a suspension following his dismissal against Chile. Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Diogo Costa are all expected to feature as the hosts fine-tune preparations for the World Cup.
What to expect

Portugal possess greater depth, more continuity and considerably more firepower, making them favourites on home soil.
However, Nigeria have shown encouraging signs under Chelle and should provide a stern examination, particularly if the midfield duo of Ndidi and Frank Onyeka can disrupt Portugal’s rhythm.
With Martinez likely to rotate throughout the contest to protect players ahead of the World Cup, the Super Eagles should enjoy periods of competitiveness, but the quality available to the hosts could ultimately prove decisive.
