Alex Iwobi has thrown his support behind England as the team most likely to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, praising their strength under manager Thomas Tuchel after a fast start in North America, Footynaija reports.
The Fulham midfielder made his view clear as England sit atop Group L with an early statement win.
England beat Croatia 4-2 in one of the tournament’s standout matches, their first World Cup victory over a FIFA top-15 side since the 2002 win against Argentina. Harry Kane scored twice, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also got on the scoresheet.
Elsewhere, Germany crushed Curaçao 7-1 before edging Ivory Coast 2-1, Argentina opened with a 3-0 win over Algeria inspired by a Lionel Messi hat-trick, and France defeated Senegal 3-1. Spain bounced back from a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde by beating Saudi Arabia 4-0, Brazil recovered from a draw with Morocco to win 3-0 against Haiti, while Portugal were held 1-1 by DR Congo.
Iwobi, who has played all his club football in England, recognises the dangers posed by France but insists he fancies the Three Lions to go all the way to World Cup glory.
Iwobi told SkySports: “I personally believe England have a great, great chance,” he told SkySports. “I mean they got so many stars in the team, so much ability. Even the ones that are not starting, anyone that comes off the bench can hurt the opposition team.
“So, I’ll say England, but I also believe in France. Of course the attacking threat that France have is scary but I’d actually hope England win it.
“Hopefully, hopefully it’s coming home. Premier League is home (referring to Arsenal’s title win after more than two decades. So hopefully the World Cup is coming home as well.”
Tuchel’s army will face former African champions Ghana on matchday two of the World Cup with a win set to guarantee a knockout round spot for either team.
