Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained during Nigeria’s June international fixtures, Footynaija reports.
The Slavia Prague centre-back suffered the injury while representing the Super Eagles, with subsequent examinations confirming significant damage that required immediate surgical intervention. The operation was carried out at the Central Military Hospital in Prague’s Střešovice district and was reported to have been successful.
Slavia Prague have now revealed that the 26-year-old will be out of action for around three months as he begins an intensive rehabilitation programme. The Czech champions expressed their support for the Nigerian and wished him a speedy return to full fitness.
The setback comes at an unfortunate time for Ogbu, who had established himself as an important figure in Eric Chelle’s squad. Following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the former Lillestrøm defender became a regular starter, featuring in five straight matches for Nigeria before the injury interrupted his progress.
His recent performances had strengthened Nigeria’s defence, helping the team record back-to-back clean sheets with goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo between the posts.
For Ogbu, the latest injury also continues a difficult run of fitness problems. Last season, physical setbacks limited him to only nine league starts as Slavia Prague went on to secure the Czech First League title.
With recovery expected to stretch into the opening months of the new campaign, Ogbu is likely to miss a significant portion of Slavia Prague’s early-season schedule before targeting a return later in the year.
