Frank Onyeka’s decision to drop down to the Championship at the start of 2026 raised eyebrows in some quarters, but the Super Eagles midfielder has turned what looked like a step backwards into one of the more compelling individual stories in English football this season, Footynaija.com reports.
The 28-year-old joined Coventry City on loan from Brentford in February, with the deal including an obligation to buy his contract permanently should the Sky Blues gain promotion to the Premier League.
He made his debut in a top-of-the-table clash against Middlesbrough, with Coventry winning 3-1 to move to the summit of the Championship. He has barely looked back since.
On April 3, he ended a two-year personal goal drought with a strike in a 3-2 win over Derby County, earning Man of the Match honours as Frank Lampard’s side tightened their grip on automatic promotion.
Coventry now sit 12 points clear of third-placed Millwall with four matches remaining, needing one point to mathematically confirm their return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.
The performances have not gone unnoticed among those who know Nigerian football closely. Emmanuel Okoduwa, the former Super Eagles and Dynamo Kyiv forward who represented Nigeria at under-23 level, has been watching Onyeka’s journey with particular interest.
‘Look at how well it has turned out’
“I have been keenly following the Championship since Frank joined the team, and I am happy with his progress,” Okoduwa exclusively told Footy-Africa.

“So now, seeing him help push the club back to the Premier League is a good thing. He has been a good signing for them since he joined, and I am glad he will have another crack at the Premier League. I also just found out that he will stay with the club if they gain promotion, and I hope that is the case, as a permanent transfer to the club will be good for him.”
He also pushed back on those who questioned the move in the first place.
“A lot of people were not happy he took a step down to find more playing time, but look at how well it has turned out. I am happy for him and the club, as well as the coach Frank Lampard, who is someone I admire a lot,” he added.
Coventry’s remaining fixtures are against Blackburn, Portsmouth, Wrexham and Watford, and a title finish is within reach for Onyeka and the club.
