Henry Onyekuru has been frozen out at Turkish Super Lig side Gençlerbirliği, and a Nigerian journalist close to the situation is pointing the finger at the club’s internal politics rather than anything the player has done wrong, Footynaija.com reports.
The 28-year-old winger, who joined Gençlerbirliği ahead of the current season, was dropped from the squad by a joint decision involving the club’s board of directors and head coach Volkan Demirel, and has since been training separately from the rest of the team.
The news broke ahead of this weekend’s Süper Lig fixture against Galatasaray, adding an uncomfortable backdrop to the club’s preparations.
Not Satisfied With Onyekuru’s performance
Nigerian journalist Buchi Laba, who says he has been following the matter closely, offered a different reading.
Writing on X, Laba stated that the club are the ones pushing Onyekuru out, and that his unavailability has nothing to do with form. He claimed the player has remained professional from the day he arrived, is fully fit, and is willing to play whenever called upon.

Laba also reported that Onyekuru’s agent travelled to Gençlerbirliği’s training ground to meet with club officials, but was refused entry to watch training and was told to wait inside the building, a condition the agent rejected before leaving.
Onyekuru has made 19 appearances for the club this season without scoring or registering an assist. With his contract running until the summer of 2027, any exit would require the club to formally terminate or negotiate his departure.
Gençlerbirliği face Galatasaray on Saturday, and whether Onyekuru features at all is now an open question.
