“It’s just disappointing” – Frank Onyeka reacts after enduring first defeat at Coventry City

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka expressed disappointment after Coventry City’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Championship on Saturday, Footynaija.com reports.

Coventry City went into the encounter as leaders of the English second division and we’re looking to extend their six game winning streak.

However, goals from Flynn Downes and Kuryu Matsuki rendered Victor Torp’s stoppage time penalty insignificant as Southampton held on to claim all three points at The CBS Arena.

Onyeka featured for 77 minutes and had a decent outing in the middle of the park as Coventry controlled possession for long spells in the game.

But he was powerless in the face of his side’s profligacy in front of goal as the Sky Blues managed to convert just one out of the six clear cut chances that fell their way during the game.

Reacting after the game, a disappointed Onyeka emphasized the need to move on from this latest setback as quickly as possible and refocus ahead of their next game.

“We don’t need to dwell on it for too long. We look forward to Swansea and we take the result today and look forward to Swansea,” he told The BBC in a post-match interview.

“When we scored the penalty, we were like this is the time, at the same time, after the penalty, we still had chances to equalize. It is just disappointing. We don’t need to dwell on this for so long.

“It was a good game on both sides but unfortunately we could not get the win. We had lots of chances which obviously did not go in. It is one of those days where things might not go well for us.

“But we need to pick ourselves up and move to the next game. Every player does not want a defeat but today is one of those days, we need to accept, and pick ourselves up and move forward to the next game.”

While Coventry’s winning run came to an end, their lead at the summit of the EFL Championship remained intact as nearest rivals Middlesbrough also failed to pick up all three points against Bristol City on Saturday.

Coventry City’s seven point cushion at the summit could come down to six if Ipswich Town win against Millwall on Sunday. Nevertheless, Onyeka and company remain on course to secure promotion back into the Premier League.
