Six countries have been eliminated from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as the tournament moved into a decisive stage following Monday night’s group matches, Footynaija.com reports.
Comoros, Zambia and Zimbabwe were the latest teams to exit the competition after the conclusion of Group A and B fixtures. They join Botswana, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, who were already eliminated after failing to pick up points in earlier rounds.
In Group A, hosts Morocco sealed top spot with a commanding 3-0 win over Zambia to finish on seven points. Mali followed them into the knockout stage despite being held to a goalless draw by Comoros. Those results left Comoros and Zambia stranded on two points each, insufficient for progression.
Group B saw Egypt confirm first place after a 0-0 draw with Angola, taking their total to seven points. Angola’s draw preserved slim hopes of qualification as a best third-placed team, while South Africa’s 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe ended their neighbours’ campaign.
Nigeria are already confirmed as Group C winners ahead of their final match against Uganda. The Super Eagles have maximum points and will send Uganda home with a win. Uganda currently sit on one point, level with Tanzania, while Tunisia require only a draw against Tanzania to qualify.
Final group matches continue on Tuesday as AFCON 2025 begins to separate contenders from those heading home early.
