“We need to create more chances” – Dessers reacts after late VAR heartbreak in Rangers’ home draw

Rangers were left frustrated at Ibrox on Saturday as they battled back with 10 men to earn a 1-1 draw against Dundee, only to see Cyriel Dessers’ stoppage-time winner ruled out by VAR, Footynaija.com reports.

The Nigerian striker thought he had secured all three points when he fired home deep into injury time, but the celebrations were cut short after a tight offside check.

The visitors had stunned the home crowd early in the second half when Ryan Astley headed Dundee ahead from a clever free-kick routine. Rangers’ troubles deepened minutes later as Nasser Djiga was sent off for a last-man challenge, leaving Russell Martin’s men to chase the game a player down.

Still, they piled on late pressure, and James Tavernier levelled from the spot in the 92nd minute after Djeidi Gassama was brought down in the box.

Dundee’s point was their first at Ibrox since 2001, while Rangers’ slow start to the season has seen them fail to win either of their opening two league fixtures for the first time since 1989.

The result also came just days after an impressive Champions League qualifying win, making the domestic setback harder for fans to accept.

Speaking afterwards, Dessers admitted Rangers must sharpen up in attack.

“I think we didn’t play a bad first half. It was good, without being great. We needed to create more clear chances,” the 30-year-old forward told club media.

The Super Eagles striker, who finished last season as the Scottish Premiership side’s top scorer, said the only real positive was their fightback.

“Even with 10 against 11, we pushed them back, created chances, and kept going until the end without giving up. That’s maybe the only positive from today,” he added.
