Three-time Champions League winners plot surprise move for Super Eagles’ Kelechi Iheanacho

Three-time CONCACAF Champions League winners Pumas UNAM are in talks to sign Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho in what could be one of Liga MX’s most eye-catching transfers of the summer, Footynaija.com reports.

The Mexican giants are pushing to lure the 28-year-old away from Sevilla. Iheanacho, who has over 50 caps for Nigeria and was part of the squad that reached the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, joined Sevilla on a free transfer from Leicester City in July 2024.

His time in Spain has been underwhelming, with injuries and competition limiting his impact. A loan to Middlesbrough in early 2025 produced one goal and two assists in 15 Championship matches.

Now, CONCACAF champions (1980, 1982 and 1989), Pumas UNAM, want to inject experience and attacking presence into their squad. As revealed in a report by News.ng, talks between the Mexican club and Sevilla are ongoing, with Pumas hopeful of agreeing a deal that would see Iheanacho swap La Liga for the high-energy atmosphere of Liga MX.

Pumas, based in Mexico City, have a history of attracting big names to bolster their squad for domestic and continental ambitions. If Iheanacho makes the switch, he will become one of the few Nigerian internationals to play in the Mexican top flight. The move could also offer the striker a fresh start after a difficult year in European football.

Sevilla are reportedly keen to offload Iheanacho’s sizeable salary, estimated at €4 million annually, to free up resources for other transfers. The forward’s future in Spain has been uncertain since manager changes and his mixed loan spell in England.
