South Africa coach Hugo Broos has unveiled a 48-man provisional squad for September’s World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria, Footynaija.com reports.

In a list released by the South Africa FA, Broos selected a mix of youth and experience as Bafana Bafana aim to defend their place at the top of Group C.

Broos’ men face Lesotho at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on 5 September before hosting Nigeria at the same venue four days later in what is expected to be one of the defining matches of the qualifying campaign.

Mamelodi Sundowns dominate the list, with captain Ronwen Williams joined by Khuliso Mudau, Thapelo Morena, Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas and Aubrey Modiba. Orlando Pirates are also strongly represented, with Evidence Makgopa, Patrick Maswanganyi, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Themba Zwane all included. Burnley striker Lyle Foster and Minnesota United forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane return to bolster the attack, while Portsmouth’s Luke Le Roux and FCSB defender Siyabonga Ngezana add European experience. Cyprus-based winger Mihlali Mayambela is also named.

However, South Africa’s position at the summit faces scrutiny after claims they fielded an ineligible player in their 2-0 win over Lesotho.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who should have served a suspension after collecting two yellow cards, played 82 minutes in that fixture. If proven, FIFA regulations could see Bafana docked three points, handing the victory to Lesotho.

South Africa currently lead Group C with 13 points, six clear of Nigeria, who begin their preparations on September 1st.

Broos will trim the squad to 23 players in the coming weeks.
