Nigeria keeps exporting promising footballers across Europe and Switzerland’s Super League has been one of the beneficiaries.

Over the years, a handful of Nigerian stars have packed their bags, crossed the Alps and brought their raw talent to Swiss pitches, often with clubs paying decent money to secure their services.

With Philip Otele making headlines as the most expensive Nigerian ever in Switzerland, Footynaija.com brings you a run down of the top 5 biggest moves by Nigerian players into the Swiss Super League.

5. Blessing Eleke – €800k (FC Ashdod to FC Luzern, 2018)

In 2018, FC Luzern decided to splash the cash on a rising Nigerian forward, paying €800k to bring Eleke from FC Ashdod. At just 22, Eleke had already built a reputation for being a powerful, tireless center-forward with a knack for goals.

Over two seasons, Eleke bagged 20 goals and chipped in with 4 assists in 70 games. He didn’t lift any silverware, but his physicality gave Luzern’s attack some much-needed bite. Eventually, he moved on to Belgium, leaving behind flashes of the raw talent that first got Luzern interested.

4. Kalu Uche – €1.00m (UD Almeria to Neuchatel Xamax, 2011)

Back in 2011, Uche, a household name for Nigerian fans after his exploits in La Liga and with the Super Eagles, made a surprising move from UD Almeria to Neuchatel Xamax for €1 million. However, things barely went according to plan in Switzerland.

Uche arrived with loads of experience but got caught up in the club’s internal chaos. In half a season, he managed 6 goals in 14 appearances before financial drama at Xamax saw him pack up and head back to Spain. A short and messy Swiss adventure for the former Nigeria number 10.

3. Umeh Emmanuel – €1.30m (Botev Plovdiv to FC Zurich, 2024)

19-year-old Umeh became one of Nigeria’s hottest prospects when FC Zurich paid €1.3 million for his signature in 2024. Fans were buzzing about his pace and close control on the left wing.

Now 20 years old, Umeh has shown he’s worth the hype. In his debut campaign, Umeh notched 2 goals and 3 assists in 35 appearances, helping Zurich stay competitive in the Super League.

If he keeps developing at this rate, don’t be surprised if we’re talking about Umeh as a future export to one of Europe’s top 5 leagues.

2. Efan Ekoku – €1.30m (Sheffield Wednesday to Grasshopper Club Zurich, 1999)

Before “big-money” African transfers became normal in Switzerland, Ekoku paved the way. Grasshopper Club Zurich splashed €1.3 million in 1999 to land the powerful striker from Sheffield Wednesday.

Ekoku didn’t disappoint. In his only season, he scored 19 goals in 28 matches and became a reliable figure in attack. Grasshoppers didn’t scoop up any major trophies during his stay, but the Nigerian forward’s leadership and experience were invaluable to a squad composed of veterans and young players.

1. Philip Otele – €3.00m (Al Wehda to FC Basel, 2025)

Otele smashed records in 2025 when FC Basel dropped €3 million to sign him from Al Wehda. The explosive left winger had already lit up the Romanian league with CFR Cluj before joining Al Wehda and Basel were desperate for his creativity and goals.

Otele wasted no time showing his class. Despite joining midway into the 24/25 campaign, he notched 9 goals and 4 assists, dazzling fans at St. Jakob-Park with his direct runs and clever footwork. He was instrumental in helping Basel lift both the Swiss Super League and Cup.
