Super Eagles legend suggests shocking Victor Osimhen alternative to Chelsea
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged his former club to consider signing the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo in place of Victor Osimhen ahead of this summer’s Club World Cup, Footynaija.com reports.

Mikel has been one of the most vocal advocates for a Chelsea-Osimhen link up ahead of next season with the former Blues midfielder constantly waxing lyrical at every given opportunity about the potential benefits of the masked striker’s addition to Enzo Maresca’s forward line.

However, with Chelsea looking an increasingly unlikely destination for the €75 million rated striker, Mikel believes Ronaldo, who turned 40 years old in February would be a great alternative for the West London giants.

What Mikel Obi said about Cristiano Ronaldo

“I’ll like to, obviously,” the AFCON 2013 winner said in an interview with TalkSPORT about potentially seeing Ronaldo at Chelsea.

“But there’s this ten day transfer period just for the tournament for the clubs to get one or two players into their teams for the FIFA Club World Cup tournament.

“I think it might be Al Hilal if he goes, so they’re trying to make him get to the tournament which will be good, even for the fans,  and for all of us to see Ronaldo and Messi compete in another tournament.”

“It’s amazing. Ronaldo is an amazing player, top goalscorer, it’ll be great to see him. Doing it at Chelsea? Yes. Of course we need a number nine, and he’s someone Delap can learn from, but everyone knows the number nine that I want us to get, but we’re not getting him.

“We need to get Osimhen, but I don’t think the club is going that route. We’ve gotten Delap and I hope he performs and gives Nicolas Jackson some competition. Then we’ll see how it leads us from the FIFA club World cup into the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Would Chelsea really sign Ronaldo?

As fancy as the idea of Ronaldo returning to a top team in one of Europe’s top five leagues sounds, it’s difficult to see this particular transfer happening.

Granted, the Portuguese legend has absolutely smashed it in the Saudi Pro League. What are the guarantees that he can come and deliver the same prolific results week in week out in arguably the toughest league in the world at this stage of his career?

With his contract at Al Nassr set to expire this month and the Club World Cup imminent, Ronaldo would most likely be on the move in the coming weeks but it’s difficult to see his next destination being Stamford Bridge.
