Former Wimbledon striker and television presenter John Fashanu has been arrested in Nigeria in connection with a land dispute, Footynaija.com reports
The 62-year-old, best known for his time as a Gladiators co-host and an FA Cup-winning footballer, was taken into custody alongside his wife, Vivian, and solicitor, Chinyere Chigbu.
Fashanu faces allegations of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespass, and obtaining by false pretence, according to the Daily Star.
However, he strongly denies the accusations and has launched a £100,000 lawsuit against the Nigerian police, claiming wrongful arrest and a violation of his rights.
The dispute revolves around a 22-acre plot of land, which a group of investors reportedly purchased for over £500,000.
According to Fashanu, the conflict began when he and his solicitor went to inspect the property after learning that the investors had sent workers to erect a fence under police protection.
Upon arrival, they were taken to a police station for questioning, where they were subsequently detained.
Fashanu alleges that he suffered “inhuman treatment” during his three-hour detention on December 16, with further restrictions on his freedom until December 19. He also claims his wife was mistakenly arrested when she accompanied him to the station, and his mobile phone was confiscated in what he describes as a “gross constitutional violation.”
Fashanu, who helped Wimbledon to their famous FA Cup triumph in 1988, also played for Aston Villa and earned two England caps. He was eligible to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the time, before he was called up by England.
Nicknamed “Fash the Bash” for his combative playing style, he later gained prominence in Nigeria through his involvement in football administration and television.
His solicitor, Chinyere Chigbu, confirmed that all three detainees have been released on bail. “The court has granted an adjournment until April 10 to allow all parties to file their responses properly,” Chigbu stated.
Fashanu has since filed a lawsuit against 12 defendants, including Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Abuja’s police commissioner, and other high-ranking officers. He insists that the ordeal has jeopardised his chances of securing a coaching role with Nigeria’s national team.
The case continues.
