Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo felt like a punch to the gut.

A night that should have strengthened the Super Eagles’ grip on World Cup qualification instead left them staring at an uphill task.

Victor Osimhen’s well-taken header seemed to have sealed the win, but defensive lapses allowed Zimbabwe to snatch a late equaliser, leaving Nigeria’s qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

It was a game of dominance without a ruthless edge, of wastefulness in attack, and of defensive naivety when it mattered most.

Here are five key takeaways from a frustrating night for the Super Eagles.

Osimhen delivers again—But can’t do it alone

Victor Osimhen once again proved why he is Nigeria’s most reliable goal threat, netting his seventh goal in World Cup qualifiers with a fine header. His movement was sharp, his work rate relentless, and his aerial presence undeniable. But too often, he was isolated or left to feed off scraps.

Nigeria’s attacking play lacked cohesion, with Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze failing to provide consistent service. Ademola Lookman had moments of promise but couldn’t find the final pass. Without better support, Osimhen’s brilliance may not be enough to drag Nigeria to the World Cup.

Lack of killer instinct in front of goal

For all their dominance, Nigeria lacked precision in front of goal. The Super Eagles created a host of chances, especially in the first half, but poor finishing let Zimbabwe off the hook.

Simon blazed a golden opportunity wide, Lookman hesitated when clean through, and Arokodare saw a header saved when he should have scored. In tight qualification battles, a single wasted chance can be the difference between success and failure. Nigeria must become far more clinical.

Defensive lapses cost Nigeria again

Nigeria’s defence had looked solid for much of the game, but when it mattered most, they fell apart. Chirewa’s equaliser exposed a lack of concentration, with the Super Eagles failing to track his run or close him down quickly enough.

The backline, marshalled by William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, struggled with Zimbabwe’s counterattacks. Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel offered attacking thrust but left gaps behind. If Nigeria continues to switch off at key moments, their World Cup dream could slip away.

A talented generation could miss the World Cup

Nigeria boast one of its most gifted attacking generations in years, but incredibly, most of them have never played at a World Cup.

Osimhen, Chukwueze, Lookman, Arokodare, and Osayi-Samuel have never featured on football’s biggest stage.

If Nigeria fail to qualify, it would mean another four-year wait—and some of these players, now in their prime, may never get the chance. For a footballing nation of Nigeria’s stature, that would be a colossal waste of talent.

World Cup qualification now in jeopardy

This was a must-win game for Nigeria, and they failed to take advantage. South Africa’s victory over Benin means the Super Eagles are now six points off the top of Group C, with only four games left to play.

With tough fixtures ahead, including a trip to South Africa, Nigeria’s path to the World Cup is now extremely complicated.

They will need near-perfect results from here on out—and hope for favours elsewhere—to avoid missing out on the 2026 tournament.
