Stanley Nwabali marked his return to competitive football with a Man of the Match display as Chippa United opened their 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw away to Golden Arrows on Saturday, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper had a lot to prove after spending several months away from the game. He left Chippa United in February after both parties agreed to end his contract, and the 30-year-old only returned to the club last month after failing to find a move that suited him.
His first official appearance since the return could hardly have gone better.

Golden Arrows created the better chances for much of the game, but Nwabali repeatedly stood in their way. He made six saves and finished the afternoon with a clean sheet as Chippa United took a point from the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium.
The Nigerian was especially busy in the second half. He saved efforts from Nhlanhla Zwane and Ronaldo Van Neel before producing another important stop to deny Thokozani Khumalo from close range late in the game.
Golden Arrows pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but Nwabali remained composed and protected Chippa’s point. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Nwabali made three high claims, three clearances and 12 ball recoveries during the match. His passing was less impressive, with a 65 per cent accuracy rate, but his work between the posts made the bigger difference.
For Nwabali, this was an encouraging way to begin his second spell with Chippa United.
His return carries more meaning after what happened during his absence. His representative later explained that the goalkeeper needed time away from football after losing three close family members within a short period. Nwabali also received support from Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle during that period.
Now he is back playing again.
The clean sheet against Golden Arrows gives Nwabali an early boost as he looks to regain his place in the Super Eagles setup. Maduka Okoye has also been competing strongly for Nigeria’s goalkeeping spot, so regular club football will be important for the Chippa United goalkeeper.
For now, Nwabali has made his return count. Six saves, a clean sheet and the Man of the Match award was a very good way to start again.
