Sassuolo have stepped up their search for a new right-back by making an official move for Sheffield United defender Femi Seriki, with the Italian club hoping to bring the Nigeria-eligible player to Serie A this summer, Footynaija reports.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Sassuolo’s proposal is worth up to €6 million. The deal includes an initial payment of €1 million and a further €5 million that would become compulsory if certain conditions are met.
Seriki has become one of Sheffield United’s most trusted defenders after working his way through the club’s academy. The 24-year-old also gained valuable experience during loan spells at Beerschot, Boston United, Rochdale and Rotherham United before earning a regular place at Bramall Lane.
Born in Manchester, Seriki is eligible to play for both England and Nigeria because of his family roots. His strong displays in the Championship have now caught the attention of clubs outside England, with Sassuolo believing he has the qualities needed to succeed in Italy’s top flight.
The pacey full-back is known for getting forward quickly, creating chances and defending well in one-on-one situations. Those qualities have made him one of Sassuolo’s priority targets as they strengthen their squad for the new Serie A season.
Sheffield United are not under pressure to sell, having already tied Seriki to a contract until 2027. Even so, a move to Italy could give the defender the chance to test himself in one of Europe’s biggest leagues while also boosting his hopes of earning a future Super Eagles call-up.
