Eric Chelle’s decision to recall Ahmed Musa for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe has prompted mixed reactions among fans, Footynaija.com understands.

At 32, the former Super Eagles captain may be past his prime, yet his experience and leadership remain valuable assets. With Chelle naming a 39-man provisional squad, Musa’s presence could play an important role in the teamʼs push for qualification.

Here are three reasons why his inclusion makes sense.

1. Experience on the International Stage

With 109 caps to his name, Musa is Nigeria’s most-capped player, and that level of experience is needed in the World Cup qualifiers. He has played in multiple AFCON tournaments and two World Cups, delivering iconic moments like his brace against Argentina in 2014.

Musa knows what it takes to thrive in high-pressure matches, and with a relatively young squad, his experience provides stability.

Even if he’s not a guaranteed starter, his influence on and off the pitch could come in handy for Chelleʼs side.

2. Leadership

Musa’s leadership extends beyond just wearing the armband. He is widely respected among his teammates and has consistently played the role of a mentor to younger players.

With Chelle still trying to find his feet as Super Eagles boss, having a strong figure like Musa in the dressing room would help to maintain unity and focus.

His professionalism and attitude are well known, and younger players like Victor Boniface could benefit from his guidance as they adjust to the demands of international football.

3. Option on the Left Wing

While Musa may not be at his peak, his versatility offers an option on the left flank, an area where Nigeria lacks depth. He provides an alternative to Moses Simon, while Samuel Chukwueze is generally considered to prefer playing on the right.

With Chelle needing squad depth for two crucial qualifiers in quick succession, Musa’s ability to operate out wide or play in an attacking role gives Nigeria more tactical flexibility.

His pace may have declined due to his age, but his intelligence and positioning still make him a useful squad player.

Ahmed Musa’s call-up may raise eyebrows, but Chelle’s decision is not without reason. His experience, leadership qualities, and positional versatility make him a valuable squad member as the Super Eagles looks to take maximum points against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
