Italian Serie A strugglers Monza have reportedly joined the race to sign Kelechi Iheanacho, with English Championship side Middlesbrough currently leading the chase for the out-of-favour Sevilla striker, Soccernet.football understands.

Iheanacho, 28, left Leicester City in the summer of 2024 after six years at the club, moving to La Liga outfit Sevilla on a free transfer. However, the Nigerian international has struggled to make an impact in Spain, managing just seven starts in 25 appearances across all competitions.

With playing time scarce, Iheanacho is now seeking an exit, and clubs from England, Italy, France, and Greece are monitoring his situation. Middlesbrough are believed to be the frontrunners, while Scottish champions Celtic have also expressed interest in securing his services.

According to reports from Spain, Monza have now entered discussions with Sevilla over a potential deal for Iheanacho. The Italian side, currently sitting at the bottom of Serie A, are desperate for attacking reinforcements to boost their survival hopes and see the former Manchester City forward as an ideal signing.

Talks between Monza and Sevilla are ongoing, with both clubs working on the financial details of a possible transfer. A deal could be reached in the coming days, giving Iheanacho an opportunity to relaunch his career in Italy.

Despite Monza’s interest, Middlesbrough remain in pole position to sign the Nigerian forward. The Championship side are in urgent need of a striker as they look to strengthen their promotion push.

With Emmanuel Latte Lath close to sealing a move to MLS side Atlanta United, Boro manager Michael Carrick is eager to bring in Iheanacho before the transfer window closes.

Celtic, meanwhile, have held talks with Sevilla regarding a loan deal with an option to buy. The Scottish club are searching for a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, who recently joined Ligue 1 side Rennes. However, negotiations have stalled, and no agreement has been reached as of now.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Iheanacho’s future remains uncertain. Monza, Middlesbrough, and Celtic are all vying for his signature, but the Nigerian striker’s next destination will likely be decided in the coming hours.
