Barcelona’s hopes of building on their win against Mallorca were dashed as they managed only a 2-2 draw against Real Betis, Soccernet.football reports.

The result saw the Catalans drop more crucial points, leaving fans frustrated by another performance that fell short of expectations.

Robert Lewandowski gave Barcelona an early lead, but Frenkie de Jong’s reckless foul gifted Betis an equaliser from the penalty spot.

Ferran Torres appeared to have secured the win with a late goal, only for Barça to crumble under pressure and concede a stoppage-time equaliser.

Here are three key takeaways from the game.

1. Barcelona losing the plot in midfield

Hansi Flick’s side looked far from their best in possession.

The patient and incisive buildup that characterised Barcelona earlier in the season was absent, replaced by hurried and risky passes that often resulted in turnovers.

The team’s reliance on long balls and counterattacks highlights a troubling trend—Barcelona’s midfield is no longer providing the creative spark needed to break down defences.

Moreover, the lack of central penetration has left the attack heavily dependent on the flanks.

Flick must address these issues quickly, as over-reliance on individual brilliance, particularly from Lamine Yamal, is not sustainable.

2. Inaki Pena saves the day

Barcelona’s inability to secure three points cannot overshadow the heroics of Inaki Pena.

The young goalkeeper delivered a standout performance, making three critical saves that prevented Real Betis from taking the lead.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side dominated proceedings, creating better chances and repeatedly threatening Barcelona’s defence.

Pena was called into action early, denying a golden opportunity in the opening minutes. He continued his brilliance in the second half, keeping Betis at bay with crucial interventions.

Without Pena’s heroics, the Catalans would likely have suffered a humiliating defeat, as Real Betis consistently outclassed them in attack.

3. Barcelona no longer title favourites

Barcelona’s dominance at the top of La Liga has evaporated. With just one win in their last five league matches, the Blaugrana’s once-commanding lead has been squandered.

Real Madrid are now just two points behind with a game in hand, while Atletico Madrid, with two games in hand, could also pull level if they capitalise on their opportunities. This collapse has raised serious questions about Barcelona’s title credentials.

Hansi Flick, once lauded for reviving the team’s fortunes, now finds himself under scrutiny. If he cannot adapt and arrest the decline, Barcelona’s La Liga hopes could slip away entirely.
