What Victor Osimhen said about emotional pre-match tribute from Galatasaray fans after Liverpool win

“Best in the world” – Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen waxes lyrical about ex-Napoli teammate

April 30, 2026

The famous lights of Anfield will shine brightly on Wednesday night as Liverpool FC attempt to overturn a first-leg deficit against Galatasaray SK in the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League, Footynaija reports.

The Turkish champions hold a slender advantage after their 1-0 victory in Istanbul last week. It means Liverpool must win at home to keep their European campaign alive, while Galatasaray need only avoid defeat to reach the quarter-finals.

European nights at Anfield have produced countless dramatic comebacks, and Liverpool’s supporters will believe another could be on the cards. Yet the visitors arrive in confident mood, carrying a five-match winning run and the knowledge that they have already beaten the Reds twice this season.

At stake is a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, and both teams travel to Merseyside knowing a single moment could decide the tie.

Match details

Competition: UEFA Champions League round of 16 – second leg
Date: Wednesday, 18 March 2026
Kick-off: 21:00 WAT
Venue: Anfield
First leg: Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool

The state of the tie

Galatasaray have already shown they can frustrate Liverpool. After beating them 1-0 earlier in the season, they repeated the scoreline in the first leg of this knockout tie.

History, however, suggests Anfield can still change everything. Liverpool have been formidable at home in Europe this season, losing only once and often overwhelming opponents with the intensity of their pressing and the atmosphere generated by the crowd.

Galatasaray’s overall record in England is modest, but they do have one famous victory, at the home of Manchester United three years ago under current coach Okan Buruk. Replicating that level of performance would send them into the quarter-finals.

Victor Osimhen: Galatasaray’s danger man

Few forwards in Europe have been as decisive in this season’s Champions League as Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian striker has scored seven goals and three assists in the competition so far and remains Galatasaray’s most potent attacking weapon.

Osimhen combines blistering pace with physical power and relentless movement in the penalty area. Even when chances are scarce, he needs only a single opening to punish defenders. His ability to run behind defensive lines will test Liverpool’s centre-backs, particularly on the counter-attack.

For Galatasaray, his role could be crucial. Liverpool must push forward to chase the tie, and that could leave space for Osimhen to exploit. If he scores at Anfield, it could dramatically swing the tie in the Turkish club’s favour.

At the same time, Liverpool will know that keeping Osimhen quiet is essential. Expect captain Virgil van Dijk and partner Ibrahima Konaté to stay tight to the striker throughout the night.

Possible line-ups

Liverpool:

Alisson; Frimpong, Van Dijk, Konaté, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ekitiké

Galatasaray:
Uğurcan Çakır; Boey, Singo, Abdülkerim Bardakcı, Jakobs; Torreira, Lemina; Barış Alper Yılmaz, Gabriel Sara, Lang; Osimhen

Recent results

Liverpool come into the match after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. Their recent form has been mixed, with two wins from their last five games.

Galatasaray, by contrast, are in excellent form. They beat Istanbul Basaksehir 3-0 in the Turkish Super League and have won their last five matches in all competitions.

What the coaches say

Liverpool coach Arne Slot said:
“Now we have a match against Galatasaray at our home stadium. We have fantastic fans who always give us strength. They will show this at Anfield, our home ground, and will be a driving force for us.”

Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk warned that the job is not finished:
“It’s not over. The second match is at their home ground and another very difficult match awaits us. Playing against a team like Liverpool is always very difficult because they are a high-quality team and you feel they can capitalise on every mistake you make.”

Betting tips

Both teams to score: Liverpool must attack, while Galatasaray have dangerous counter-attacking threats.

Victor Osimhen anytime scorer: the Nigerian has been in excellent Champions League form.

Liverpool win in 90 minutes: the Reds’ home record in Europe remains strong.

Prediction

A one-goal deficit is rarely safe at Anfield. Liverpool will likely dominate possession and create chances as they chase the tie.

Galatasaray, however, have the attacking quality to make life uncomfortable, especially if Osimhen finds space on the break.

Expect a tense and dramatic night. Liverpool may win the match on the night, but the tie could go right down to the wire.

Prediction: Liverpool 2–1 Galatasaray (Liverpool advance after extra time).
