Nigerian striker Anas Yusuf has highlighted the importance of Saturday’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 qualification decider against regional rivals Ghana, Soccernet.football reports.

After missing the 2018 and 2021 editions, Yusuf insists that overcoming the Black Galaxies in Uyo would be the perfect gift to Nigerians.

“It’s true that Nigeria did not participate in the last two CHAN editions, and it’s very sad and unfortunate,” Yusuf said after Thursday’s intense training session at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. “However, we believe the best Christmas and New Year gift we can offer Nigerians is a victory over Ghana on Saturday.”

Yusuf, the Nigeria Premier Football League’s (NPFL) top scorer with 10 goals and two hat-tricks this season, expressed confidence in the team’s preparation. “We are working hard to ensure we successfully complete the task we began in Accra, Ghana, last week, with a win on Saturday,” he added.

Head Coach Daniel Ogunmodede also expressed his determination to secure Nigeria’s place in the CHAN finals, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda in early 2025.

After a goalless draw in Accra, Ogunmodede emphasised a more aggressive approach for the second leg. “We are doing everything to avoid distractions. Playing at home doesn’t guarantee anything; our objective is clear – win at all costs to secure our place in East Africa next year.”

The match is set to be an intense encounter, given the historical rivalry between the two nations.

Ghana has won three of their six CHAN clashes with Nigeria, including a penalty shootout victory in the 2014 semi-final. However, Nigeria’s defensive display in Accra last weekend offered hope, and the team is determined to deliver on home soil.

Moroccan referee Hamza El Fariq will oversee the game, with a team of officials from Morocco and Sierra Leone ensuring fair play. For the Super Eagles B, a win would mark their return to CHAN after eight years, while for Ghana, it’s a chance to restore pride after their recent AFCON disappointment.

All eyes will be on Uyo as both teams battle for supremacy and a place in the 2024 CHAN finals.
