Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign Nico Williams, a target for Newcastle United, Liverpool, and Chelsea, Soccernet.football reports.

Williams, 21, has been a standout performer at this summer’s European Championships in Germany. He is set to start again for Spain in the final against England, with La Roja just one game away from lifting the historic trophy.

Spanish outlet Sport reports that Barcelona, 27-time champions, have successfully negotiated with Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta.

While specific details about the contract are not disclosed, the agreement puts Barcelona in a strong position to sign Williams ahead of other top European clubs.

Barcelona will now focus on meeting Williams’ release clause, which is around £46 million. Athletic Bilbao, Williams’ current employers, are determined to keep him, but they cannot stop him from leaving if the clause is met.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has earlier expressed his admiration for Williams, saying: “Obviously, I like him, and very much. Today we can afford to sign Nico Williams. We can face a signing like Nico.”

The potential arrival of Williams at the Nou Camp would be a significant blow to Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Atletico Madrid, who have all been monitoring his progress at Euro 2024.

These clubs need a right winger and have been impressed by Williams’ flair, creativity, and impact against top opponents.

Williams has faced strong teams like Italy, Croatia, Germany, and France, proving to be a challenge for some of the world’s best defenders. Barcelona currently has Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Raphinha as wide options.

Williams’ arrival could lead to the exit of one of these players, though Yamal is unlikely to leave due to his impressive performances for Spain and his potential at just 16 years old.
