Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy cannot wait to return to football management with his year-long sabbatical set to end this summer, Soccernet.football reports.

Nistelrooy took to coaching after ending a brilliant career that saw him excel in the Netherlands, England, Spain, and Germany.

Considered one of the finest Dutch strikers of all time, Nistelrooy won two Eredivisie titles with PSV, the 2003 Premier League with Man United, and two La Liga with Real Madrid before calling it quits at Malaga in 2012.

After retirement, the former Heerenveen star initially tested his hands in the media industry, working as a studio analyst for ESPN during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He, however, settled for a career in coaching and handled Jong PSV before he was made manager of PSV Eindhoven in May 2022.

Nistelrooy led the Red and Whites to 33 wins, ten draws, and eight losses in 51 games, helping them to win the KNVB Cup and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Still, he was relieved of his position in May 2023 and has been weighing his options since then.

The 47-year-old wants back in management, and he confesses he has been talking to different clubs and associates intending to get the job that fits his profile.

Nistelrooy, however, maintains he wants to handle a club in Europe and not in ‘the desert’, an apparent dig at many of his colleagues jumping at coaching offers in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the Middle East.

“I have spoken to clubs from several countries,” Nistelrooy told the Mirror.

“In England, you see more and more that they are going for a model with a technical director and a head coach. It’s no longer the model of the coach or manager buying the players. I find that model with a technical director and a manager very interesting.

“The technical director gets the players and looks for a manager to match. You can work on a good foundation, like Xabi Alonso now at Bayer Leverkusen, supported by a technical director who also has every interest in working really well together.’

“I know Peter Kenyon from my playing days at United. He is now 70 and an independent consultant. This man has a wealth of experience, a network, a frame of reference.

“I have asked if he would review the organisation of (interested) clubs for me. It is super important to get as complete a picture as possible. I’m really looking for the right step.”

Van Nistelrooy added: “I am looking at countries where I have played myself, like England, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.

“But a club with a good profile could well be in Belgium as well. I will definitely stay within Western Europe. I am not going to work in the desert. I want to show what I can do as a coach.”

Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in five seasons at Old Trafford and also played for Heerenveen, PSV, Real Madrid, Hamburg, and Malaga.
