Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has shared fascinating insights into his close relationship with his father, Chuka, who has been a constant presence throughout his footballing journey, Footynaija.com reports.
From his early days with Nigeria’s national team to his time at Arsenal, Everton, and now Fulham, Chuka has remained a dedicated supporter, always offering encouragement and advice. Even now, at 28, Iwobi, who is Nigeria’s second most-capped Premier League player, admits his father’s enthusiasm sometimes catches him off guard.
Speaking to Fulham TV, Iwobi revealed: “You should see my Dad in the house; he is always wearing a training kit, ready to go.” But while his father’s unwavering support is endearing, it can also be a little embarrassing.
“But sometimes it is embarrassing because if we are going to Sainsbury’s, and he’s with me, he’s wearing a big Iwobi top, and I am like, ‘Dad, chill,’ but he’s just proud.”
Despite the occasional embarrassment, Iwobi appreciates his father’s football knowledge. With his uncle, Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha, also in the family, Chuka has a strong understanding of the game.
“He does not go into detail,” Iwobi explained. “But sometimes he’ll say, ‘Why didn’t you shoot at this time?’ That’s just being a Dad.”
Iwobi’s performances this season have been crucial for Fulham, with seven goals and three assists to his name.
Iwobi holds the Premier League record for the Nigerian with the most assists at 31, after surpassing Shola Ameobi and Nwankwo Kanu who boast 30 and 29, respectively.
