Taiwo Awoniyi has earned a place in the BBC Premier League Team of the Week after scoring a superb solo goal in Coventry City’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland, Footynaija reports.
BBC football pundit Troy Deeney selected the Super Eagles striker in his team following the conclusion of matchday nine, rewarding his impressive display at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Awoniyi doubled Coventry’s lead in the 37th minute with his first Premier League goal for the club. The forward won possession in Sunderland’s half, drove into the penalty area and evaded Granit Xhaka before firing at goal. His effort took a deflection on its way past the goalkeeper.
The goal capped an impressive performance from the former Nottingham Forest striker, who joined Coventry during the summer in search of a fresh start.
Deeney backs Awoniyi to help Coventry survive
Explaining his decision to include the Nigerian in his Team of the Week, Deeney praised the quality of his goal and welcomed his return to regular football.
“Unbelievable solo goal. It’s really good to see the big fella back playing and being in a situation where he can impose himself. If Coventry are to stay up, he’s going to be why,” the former Watford striker said.
Arsenal lead the Team of the Week selections with three players, while Coventry and Tottenham Hotspur have two representatives each. Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Hull City have one player apiece.
Awoniyi has now scored twice in eight appearances across all competitions since joining Coventry. His latest display could provide a timely boost as he looks to establish himself at his new club.
