Semi Ajayi made a memorable return to the Premier League with Hull City, scoring against Manchester United as the newly promoted side secured a stunning 2-0 victory on the opening day, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles defender was in the right place at the right time in the 17th minute, reacting quickest after Senne Lammens saved Oli McBurnie’s effort against the post. Ajayi followed up from close range to give Hull a lead that reflected their strong start to the game.
Manchester United had plenty of the ball, but Hull looked more dangerous in the first half. Regan Slater caused problems with his set-piece deliveries and produced another excellent cross in the 38th minute, allowing Nobel Mendy to head the second goal past the visitors’ goalkeeper.
For Hull, it was already a special occasion before kick-off. The club were playing their first Premier League match since returning to the top flight, with the MKM Stadium hosting a top-flight game for the first time in more than nine years.
Ajayi also had a personal reason to remember the afternoon. The Nigerian became the first Hull player to score a Premier League goal against Manchester United since Matty Fryatt in May 2014. He also produced a strong defensive display before leaving the game in the 64th minute.
Ajayi helps Hull hand United unwanted record
The result also created an unwanted piece of Premier League history for Manchester United.
Before Saturday, United had never lost their opening Premier League game against a newly promoted side. They had won nine and drawn three of their previous 12 matches in that situation. Hull have now ended that run.

United tried to change the game after the break. Marcus Rashford came on at half-time, while Benjamin Sesko was introduced in the second half as United searched for a way back.
The visitors dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances. Hull’s defence stayed organised and dealt with United’s crosses, while goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis produced an important save to deny Bryan Mbeumo.
United’s frustration grew as the game went on. They finished with more of the ball but could not find a goal, while Hull protected their two-goal advantage.
Ajayi had already done his part before leaving the pitch. His early goal gave Hull the start they needed, and his side held on to make history.
