Peter Olayinka has revealed how Odion Ighalo helped convince him to join Al Wehda after the Saudi Arabian club presented their project to the Super Eagles forward, Footynaija.com reports.
The 30-year-old left APOEL Nicosia this summer and joined Al Wehda as a free agent, taking his career to another country after previous spells in Czechia, Belgium, Serbia and Cyprus. Al Wehda compete in the Saudi First Division after their relegation from the top flight.
Olayinka has already played four times for Nigeria since making his Super Eagles debut in 2019, although his international career has been interrupted by injuries and changes in his club situation. His move to Al Wehda gives him another chance to establish himself in a new league.
Ighalo convinced Olayinka over Al Wehda
Speaking to SCORENigeria, Olayinka said he first discussed the club’s plans with the coach before turning to Ighalo, who had previously played for Al Wehda.
“I spoke to the coach of the team and he explained to me the club’s project. I thought about it, it was interesting,” Olayinka said.
He then contacted Ighalo, who spent two seasons with Al Wehda between 2023 and 2025. The former Super Eagles striker spoke positively about the club and encouraged Olayinka to accept the move.
Olayinka is joining Al Wehda at a different stage of the club’s history. Ighalo played for the Mecca-based side in the Saudi Pro League, while Olayinka arrives with the club fighting to return to the top flight.
The Nigerian forward is determined to make that challenge count.
“I am here to be successful with the team, to make great history with them,” he said.
“It’s a great honour to be here to do great things. I am here to give my best.”
Olayinka arrives after scoring two goals in 14 league appearances for APOEL during the second half of last season. His career has also included successful spells at Slavia Prague and Red Star Belgrade, where he won league and cup titles.
