Victor Osimhen has ended the talk about Galatasaray’s famous number nine shirt by making it clear that he will keep wearing his trusted number 45 instead, Footynaija reports.
Many fans expected the Super Eagles striker to inherit the iconic jersey after Mauro Icardi left it vacant. With Osimhen now a permanent Galatasaray player following his move from Napoli last summer, the number seemed like the natural next step.
Instead, the Nigerian star has chosen to stick with the shirt that has become part of his success story in Istanbul.
Speaking about the decision, Osimhen admitted the number nine shirt could have boosted shirt sales but said he values the personal connection he has with number 45.
“I expect you’ll sell more shirts, but I think you’ll understand me. Number 45 brought me good luck at Galatasaray,” Osimhen said as per Sabah.
He added: “I want to continue with the same number,” and refused to take the number 9.
The 27-year-old has become one of Galatasaray’s biggest stars after an outstanding loan spell convinced the Turkish champions to sign him permanently. His goals and energetic performances quickly made him a favourite among supporters at RAMS Park.
Osimhen has already started preparing for another busy season. He recently scored his first goal of preseason in Galatasaray’s entertaining 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul, giving fans another reason to believe he can lead the club’s attack again this campaign.
