‘Fire me if he doesn’t work out’ – The story behind Yohanna’s discovery before his Brighton move

The evening Zadok Yohanna’s life changed did not happen in a boardroom or over a formal scouting exercise, Footynaija.com reports.

It all began in Nigeria, at a football pitch packed with competing scouts, where one man watched a teenager play and decided on the spot that he was willing to lose everything if he was wrong.

Yohanna grew up in Bauchi State in north-eastern Nigeria, belongs to the Sayawa ethnic group, and left home at around 12 or 13 years old to relocate independently to Kaduna in pursuit of football. He landed at Ikon Allah Football Academy, a grassroots setup in Kaduna that would later become a household name in Nigerian football circles.

Zadok Yohanna: Nigerian youngster bids emotional farewell to AIK after Brighton transfer

AIK paid Ikon Allah a reported €750,000 for his services in July 2025. Less than a year later, Brighton paid £21.5 million to take him to the Premier League. That journey began with one phone call.

Herish Sadi, the scout who made that call, has spoken publicly for the first time about what he saw in Nigeria that evening. He watched Yohanna play as a number 10 and on the wing in a setting packed with competing scouts, and knew immediately that he could not afford to wait.

‘I finalized the deal that same evening’

Speaking via Brila Media, Sadi recalled the moment with the clarity of someone who had been waiting to tell the story.

“I was really impressed watching him play as a number 10 and on the wing. There were a lot of scouts there, and we had to move fast,” he said.

What followed was extraordinary. Sadi picked up the phone and called AIK’s CEO directly.

“I said: ‘How would a hundred million Krona feel? You need to close this deal right away. If he doesn’t turn out well, fire me. Fire me without compensation.’”

He did not wait for a second opinion.

“I negotiated with the president and managers there. I actually finalised the deal that same evening, and he officially became an AIK player.”

By April 2026, 32 scouts had attended a single AIK league match just to watch Yohanna. Chelsea, Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund were all in the queue.

Then, on March 9, he scored a brace in a 4-0 win over BK Häcken, and European football sat up properly. Brighton moved fastest and smartest, and the deal was done.

Sadi does not need to worry about being fired without compensation. The teenager from Bauchi just became one of the most exciting signings of the Premier League summer.
