Newly-committed Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has stirred debate among football fans after naming his all-time Super Eagles XI, with several legendary figures missing from his selection, Footynaija reports.
The Wrexham goalkeeper, who recently switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, chose a side dominated by players from the modern generation of Nigerian football. While familiar names such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Victor Osimhen were included, the absence of icons like Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini and Daniel Amokachi immediately caught attention.
Okonkwo, born in 2001, grew up long after Nigeria’s golden moments of the 1990s, including the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the 1996 Olympic gold medal victory in Atlanta. His choices reflected a generation shaped more by recent Super Eagles stars than by the heroes of earlier eras.
In goal, he selected former captain Vincent Enyeama, a decision few supporters would question. Enyeama remains one of the greatest goalkeepers Africa has produced, remembered for leading Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON title and for his remarkable performances in France with Lille.
His defence featured Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey and Elderson Echejile. In midfield, the former Arsenal trainee paired Besiktas ace Wilfred Ndidi with Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel.
Further forward, Okocha was handed the creative role behind a front three of Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Victor Moses.
Okonkwo himself is now preparing to begin his own chapter with the Super Eagles after receiving a call-up for the Unity Cup and upcoming friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
