AFC Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has issued a strong statement of intent ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup, revealing his ambition to establish himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Footynaija.com reports.
Born in England to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent, Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level before pledging his international future to the Super Eagles earlier this year.
FIFA approved the talented shot-stopper’s switch of allegiance just two months ago, paving the way for a possible debut under Eric Chelle next month.

If handed a maiden Super Eagles call-up, Okonkwo will head to the Unity Cup on the back of an impressive campaign with Wrexham, where his performances across 39 games this season showcased his quality and massive potential.
However, breaking into Nigeria’s starting lineup will not come easy. The Super Eagles already possess two dependable goalkeepers in Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, both of whom have delivered solid performances for the national team in recent years.
Despite the fierce competition, Okonkwo has made it clear that he is ready to fight for the number-one shirt and hopes to become a trusted figure for the three-time African champions.

“It’s an honour to even get the opportunity to play for your country. I’m so excited; I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now, and to have this opportunity is incredible,” he said.
“I want to become a consistent performer for the country, I want to be someone who they can trust in their goal for every game.
“Like I said, the process to get there starts with me integrating into the team, learn the way we play, connect with my defenders, the attackers, and everyone really. I know it’s a process, but I want to work towards it and build that trust.”

With Nwabali currently out of commission after terminating his contract in South Africa and remaining without a club since, Okonkwo’s biggest obstacle to the starting shirt will likely be Okoye, who also enjoyed an outstanding campaign at Udinese.
