Jeff Ekhator has offered a candid look into his dual identity, revealing that his Nigerian roots run deep even as he continues to climb through Italy’s youth international ranks, Footynaija.com reports.

The 19-year-old striker, born in Genoa to Nigerian parents, holds dual Italian and Nigerian citizenship from birth. This has kept the Super Eagles conversation very much alive around his name.

Ekhator has made over 20 Serie A appearances for Genoa this season, scoring thrice, while also adding a goal in the Coppa Italia.

Speaking to Vivo Azzurro TV, the teenager gave a revealing insight into his background and sense of identity.

“Both my parents are Nigerian,” Ekhator said, per Pedulla.

“They speak to me in both Italian and Nigerian. I’d like to go, maybe this summer. They told me something about when they came here to work. We’re all happy together. When I’m with my friends, I feel more Nigerian, but otherwise, I feel more Italian.”

Super Eagles window still open

Despite his progression through Italy’s youth setup, the door to the Super Eagles has not closed.

Ekhator has not played any minute for Italy’s senior team, meaning he remains eligible to switch his allegiance to Nigeria under FIFA rules, which allow a one-time switch provided the player has not appeared for a senior national team in a competitive fixture.

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has said that he wants to attract players of Nigerian descent performing at the highest levels in Europe, and Ekhator fits that profile precisely.

For now, though, Ekhator’s focus is on his club form and Italy’s Under-21 team.

“I didn’t expect this quick progression because there are other players who deserve it. I’m confident in my abilities and that I’ve made another step from the Under-19s to the Under-21s,” he added, reflecting on his rise through the youth ranks.

His most recent Serie A strike was in a win away at Pisa, a result that helped Genoa edge closer to securing mathematical safety in the top flight.
