Super Eagles star backs relegation-threatened Werder Bremen to retain Bundesliga status

Werder Bremen sporting director Peter Niemeyer has provided clarity on the future of Felix Agu as questions continue to swirl around the Super Eagles defender’s long-term stay at the club, Footynaija.com reports.

Agu has struggled to build momentum this season, with injuries once again disrupting his progress in Bremen. The 26-year-old has managed just a handful of appearances across all competitions, with ankle and muscular issues limiting his availability for much of the campaign.

Those recurring setbacks also ruled him out of Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, a tournament he was widely expected to feature in before fitness concerns intervened.

With his current deal set to expire next summer, speculation has naturally grown over Agu’s future. However, Niemeyer has moved to ease those concerns, stressing that the club still values the versatile defender despite his injury troubles.

“Felix enjoys a high level of appreciation, both within the coaching team and the sporting management. That’s why we can very well imagine extending his contract,” Niemeyer said, per quotes revealed by Diechstube.

Capable of operating on either flank as well as in midfield, Agu’s flexibility remains a key asset, even if injuries have prevented him from consistently showcasing his full ability since arriving from VfL Osnabruck in 2020.

Meanwhile, Bremen’s focus remains split between planning for the future and securing their top-flight status. The Bundesliga outfit currently sit just above the relegation places and will need a strong finish to the season to avoid being dragged into the drop zone.

Should they retain their place in the German top flight, the club are expected to step up efforts to tie Agu, who also recently indicated his desire to continue at Bremen, down to a new deal during the close season.
