Super Eagles star backs relegation-threatened Werder Bremen to retain Bundesliga status

Super Eagles defender Felix Agu believes Werder Bremen have enough quality to avoid dropping out from the German Bundesliga by the end of the season, Footynaija.com reports.

Bremen are currently embroiled in a battle to retain their top flight status, with Daniel Thioune’s side sitting dangerously close to relegation water as we enter the final weeks of the ongoing campaign.

With only eight games left to play in the 2025/2026 season, the River Islanders have 28 points, just three points clear of St. Pauli, who occupy one of the three available relegation slots in the Bundesliga.

They’ll be desperate to get points on the board this weekend, but they face a tricky test against fellow strugglers FC Koln, who’ve only managed to gather 27 points so far.

Assessing Werder Bremen’s chances of survival ahead of the game, Agu expressed optimism about the team’s ability to win enough points and maintain their top flight status.

“Of course we want to avoid relegation at all costs,”  the Nigeria international said in an interview with Deichstube.

“We have it in our own hands. I think we’ve offered a lot in the last few games. That makes me feel positive that we still get enough points, leave at least three teams behind us and hopefully not have to tremble for too long.

“Those are definitely six-point games that can give us the biggest boost. These are important games for the head. At the Derby we also have something to make amends.

“But now we focus on Cologne, which we also want to beat. But even after that, there are still points to be scored.

“No team, except maybe Bayern, is unbeatable. That’s why I don’t see us in the games after that without a chance.”

Agu has made just 10 appearances for Werder Bremen this season, eight of which have come as starts. His limited involvement has been largely due to injury setbacks, having spent nearly four months on the sidelines with ankle and adductor issues.
