Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has rallied behind his teammate Gunay Guvenc after the goalkeeper’s unfortunate error sealed Galatasaray’s shock exit from the Turkish Cup following a 2-0 defeat to Genclerbirligi on Wednesday evening, Footynaija.com reports.
Guvenc endured a difficult night at RAMS Park as the defending champions battled Genclerbirligi in what many expected to be a straightforward victory and progression into the semi-finals.
However, with Galatasaray unable to take due advantage of their first half dominance, Genclerbirligi stunned their mighty hosts early in the second half after Firatcam Uzum reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to net the opening goal of the match.
Despite going behind, Gala continued to dominate proceedings and seemed to be edging closer to finding an equalizer before Guvenc’s poor attempt to claim a cross into the box allowed Adama Traore to double the visitors’ lead.

That particular error killed the game and disgruntled Galatasaray fans did not hide their displeasure as they jeered and whistled at the visibly shaken 34-year-old Turkish shot-stopper.

Reacting after the game, Osimhen, who made his return from a spell on the sidelines with a cameo appearance off the substitutes bench, strongly backed his teammate while emphasizing the experienced goalkeeper’s importance to the team.

“We stand with Günay Güvenç,” Osimhen wrote via his Instagram story.
“A single moment doesn’t define a player. Mistakes are part of football. It can never outweigh the effort, commitment, and passion he brings to the team. Football is a game of highs and lows, what truly matters is how we respond and how we support each other through those moments.
“To our fans, thank you for the support.”

After falling short in the Turkish Cup, Galatasaray will now turn their full attention to the Super Lig where they will face arch rivals Fenerbahce in a potential title decider this weekend.

Very useful tips! I’m excited to implement them soon.
