Feyenoord have intensified their pursuit of Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez as the Dutch club prepares for a significant rebuild at the back this summer, Footynaija reports.
The Eredivisie giants are understood to have closely monitored the 24-year-old during Rangers’ thrilling 6-3 victory over Falkirk earlier this month. Reports indicate that their scouts were in attendance specifically to assess Fernandez’s rapid development. Interest in the Nigeria international is growing across Europe, but Feyenoord’s need appears increasingly urgent.

💙 The 24-year-old has been recognised by his fellow professionals in the top-flight for an outstanding campaign at the heart of the Rangers defence.

Coached by former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, Feyenoord are entering a transitional phase defensively, with long-serving centre-back Gernot Trauner approaching the end of his contract. Injuries and inconsistency have also exposed a lack of depth, forcing the club to look beyond its current options as it aims to remain competitive domestically and in Europe.
Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United last year, has quickly established himself as one of the standout defenders in Scotland. Standing at 1.98 metres, he combines physical dominance with composure on the ball, qualities that fit neatly into Van Persie’s tactical approach, which demands both defensive solidity and technical confidence in build-up play.

Feyenoord are, however not the only clubs who have Fernandez on their shopping list. Clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are all believed to be tracking his progress, while Bayer Leverkusen also had representatives watching the same fixture. Such competition is likely to complicate Feyenoord’s efforts, particularly given Rangers’ strong negotiating position.
The Scottish club reportedly value Fernandez highly, with a long-term contract running until 2029 strengthening their leverage in any potential deal. His growing reputation, boosted further by international recognition with Nigeria, means any transfer would require a substantial financial commitment.
