Ex-Super Eagles star reveals how he struggled to break into Real Madrid first team

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has opened up on how a shoulder injury and La Liga’s foreign player regulations denied him a senior appearance for Real Madrid, Footynaija.com reports.

Adepoju joined Real Madrid in 1989 as an 18-year-old after catching the eye at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia, where Nigeria’s Flying Eagles made a strong impression.

The Ibadan-born midfielder was immediately assigned to Castilla, the club’s second team, where he flourished as a box-to-box midfielder. He scored 17 goals in his first season as Castilla won the Segunda División B title, and followed that up with an equally impressive second campaign in the second tier.

But while his performances in the lower divisions were consistent and eye-catching, breaking into the senior squad was never straightforward.

La Liga rules at the time permitted each club to register no more than four foreign players in their first-team squad, and Real Madrid’s four slots were already occupied by some of the biggest names in world football.

‘In that period, they could only have four foreigners signed, and they already had the four,’ Adepoju said on the Play Zone Podcast.

‘They had Hugo Sanchez, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Prosinečki, and Ricardo Rocha. I was in the second team, playing and doing very well.’

With those four spots spoken for by established stars of that level, there was no regulatory room for Adepoju regardless of how well he performed for Castilla. The quota rule placed him at an automatic disadvantage that had nothing to do with ability or form.

A chance to break through did present itself during the 1991-92 season, when Mexican legend Hugo Sanchez sustained an injury that opened up one of the four foreign slots.

The club turned to Adepoju as the most ready option to fill the gap for the remainder of the season.

‘When Hugo Sanchez got injured, they wanted to bring me in to substitute and play until the end of the season,’ Adepoju recalled.

‘Unfortunately, I had a shoulder injury, and that was why I couldn’t get into the first team.’

The timing was devastating. His one genuine opportunity to pull on the Real Madrid first-team shirt came at the exact moment his own body let him down. Two injuries, two players, one window that closed before it could open.

When the season ended, a managerial change at the club sealed his fate. The incoming coach did not include the Nigerian in his plans, and Adepoju left the Santiago Bernabéu without a single senior appearance to his name.

‘After the season was when I left because another coach came in, and I was not in his plans,’ he concluded.
