Rafiu Durosinmi continued his scoring form for Genk on Saturday, finding the net in their 2-0 Belgian Cup victory over Virton as head coach Jess Thorup looks to build on recent improvements after a difficult start to the season, Footynaija.com reports.
Genk entered the cup tie after beating Kortrijk 3-0 in the Belgian Pro League, their first league victory since August 28. That result offered some relief after a run of inconsistent performances, but Thorup needed his players to show that they could carry the same confidence into the cup.
They responded with a controlled display against Virton, who play in Belgium’s second division. Daan Heymans opened the scoring before Durosinmi doubled Genk’s advantage in the 28th minute, putting the visitors in a comfortable position before half-time.
The Nigerian’s goal took his tally to seven across competitions this season, adding to the six he had scored in the league. As Completesports reported, his contribution also drew praise from Thorup, who was pleased with the team’s approach and the quality of their attacking play.
Thorup wants Genk to build on the win
The coach singled out his players’ mentality and their work in duels, explaining that they had followed the plan agreed before kick-off.
“I especially liked our first half. We won the duels and found the solutions in the way we agreed in advance,” Thorup said, as quoted by Het Belang van Limburg.
He added that Genk’s two goals had put the tie beyond Virton’s reach, allowing his side to manage the second half without putting qualification at risk.
Durosinmi’s contribution comes at a useful time for Genk. The striker has scored regularly in the league, and his cup goal gives Thorup further evidence of his value in attack as the team seeks greater consistency.
Genk have now booked their place in the last 16 of the Belgian Cup, with the draw scheduled for Sunday. Their next league assignment is against Standard Liège on October 25, when they will hope to carry their recent improvement into another important match.
