Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso has left out highly rated defender Michael Kayode from his latest squad, a decision that could have major implications for the player’s international future, Footynaija reports.
Kayode has been one of the most consistent performers for Brentford this season. Since turning his initial loan move into a permanent deal from Fiorentina in 2025, the right-back has grown into a key figure, starting almost every league game and impressing with his pace, strength and defensive awareness. He recently marked another milestone by scoring his first Premier League goal in a draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Despite that strong form, Gattuso opted for experience ahead of youth as Italy prepare for a crucial World Cup qualifying playoff. Established names such as Federico Dimarco were preferred, as the coach leaned on players he trusts in high-pressure situations. The decision reflects Italy’s cautious approach after missing the last two World Cups, but it has also sparked debate about whether emerging talents are being overlooked.
Kayode’s absence is even more surprising given growing calls within Italian football for his inclusion. Some observers believe the 21-year-old offers the athleticism and modern full-back qualities the national team currently lacks.
🚨 It will be a smart thing for NFF to approach Kayode, 21, after being snubbed by Italy🇮🇹

Aside from his long throws, he will come to the 🇳🇬🦅 with defensive & attacking quality.
The earlier we approach him, the better for Nigeria Football.

For Nigeria, however, the development could be significant. Kayode, who is still eligible to represent the Super Eagles, has yet to make a senior appearance for Italy, meaning his international future remains open. His omission from this squad may give Nigerian officials renewed confidence in their efforts to convince him to switch allegiance.
With top clubs across Europe – including Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Juventus – monitoring his progress and his reputation continuing to rise, Kayode now finds himself at a crossroads. If Italy continue to overlook him, Nigeria may seize the opportunity to secure one of the Premier League’s most promising young defenders.
