Lookman’s choice explained: How Atlético edged out Fenerbahce

Atlético Madrid reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ademola Lookman after weeks of negotiation that included interest from Fenerbahce, Footynaija.com reports.

The Super Eagles winger formally accepted the Spanish club’s proposal, choosing the move to La Liga over a transfer to Turkey. The decision concluded a period of uncertainty that began with Lookman’s transfer request to Atalanta in the summer of 2025.

Fenerbahce had engaged directly with Atalanta and proposed a salary of approximately €8.5–9 million plus bonuses. The talks failed to produce a final agreement because the two clubs could not settle payment terms and bank guarantees.

Atlético’s offer, reported at €35 million fixed with €5 million in add‑ons, met Atalanta’s conditions and provided a clear plan for the move.

Reasons Revealed

As pointed out by Nigerian journalist, Buchi Laba, the player’s discussions with Atlético coach Diego Simeone were the decisive factor. The Argentine manager had reportedly outlined Lookman’s position in the squad and the club’s plan for his integration.

The meeting, said to last about an hour, clarified the Nigerian’s playing opportunities, as were not necessarily mirrored in the discussions with Fenerbahce.

Atlético had also maintained interest in Lookman over many transfer windows. This sustained pursuit, and a clear contract structure and the certainty of execution, was different from the more recent negotiations with Fenerbahce.

Atalanta confirmed that all terms with Atlético had been agreed before Lookman’s acceptance. The Serie A club had rejected previous proposals that did not meet their requirements, including the initial offer from Fenerbahce.

Lookman’s decision ensures continuity in a top European league and allows him to continue competing in domestic and continental competitions.

Lookman joined Atalanta from Leicester City in 2022 after spells with Everton and Fulham. He contributed to Atalanta’s 2024 UEFA Europa League triumph, scoring a hat-trick in the final, and was named African Footballer of the Year the same year.

The 28-year-old has also been a regular for Nigeria, featuring in the recently-concluded Africa Cup of Nations.

Atlético are expected to complete medical examinations and registration before the European winter window closes.
