Chiamaka Nnadozie’s breakthrough season has carried her to new heights, with the Brighton goalkeeper ending up fourth in the 2025 Women’s Yashin Trophy, Footynaija.com reports.

It marked the first time an African shot-stopper had broken into the award’s top five, reflecting her rise on both the domestic and international stage.

Her campaign was defined by consistency. At the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, she stayed strong under pressure as Nigeria reclaimed their title in style, a run that not only brought back the Super Falcons’ dominance but also secured gifts worth at least $100,000 for each of the team members.

Before moving to England, her time at Paris FC brought European exposure, and she has carried that experience into the WSL with Brighton, where her saves have already made the difference in several matches.

Her presence has lifted Brighton’s dressing room as well, with teammates praising her leadership qualities and calmness in high-pressure games, traits that explain why she’s fast becoming a global name.

The performances ensured her name was mentioned among the best in the world. Her composure in penalty situations, alongside her shot-stopping, has been a regular feature of her game and played no small part in her nomination.

Yet the voting details have told a different story from a Nigerian perspective.

As confirmed in a report by Pulse Sports, Nigerian journalist Tega Onojaife of Smooth 98.1 FM voted Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton first, with Nnadozie in second.

That outcome has caused surprise among fans, though Nnadozie’s standing in the global top five still places her in elite company. At 24, with her career only gathering momentum, further recognition appears inevitable.
