Cyriel Dessers is set to call time on his Rangers spell after being spotted in Athens ahead of a transfer to Panathinaikos, Footynaija.com reports.

The Nigerian forward landed in Greece just after 2:30 a.m. on Monday, only hours after featuring in the Old Firm derby against Celtic. He flew out from London immediately after the match, arriving quietly before heading to his hotel.

The move, valued at around €5m, is expected to be confirmed once Dessers completes a medical, according to Gazzetta.

Panathinaikos have been pushing hard to finalise the deal and appear to have beaten AEK Athens, Feyenoord and Hellas Verona to his signature.

For Cyriel Dessers, 30, this is the latest stop in a nomadic career that has already taken him from Belgium to the Netherlands, Italy and Scotland.

He first rose to prominence at Heracles Almelo before sealing a move to Genk. His most successful campaign came at Feyenoord, where he finished as the top scorer in the 2021–22 UEFA Conference League with 10 goals as the Dutch club reached the final.

Since then, he has established himself as a reliable striker in European football, with 163 goals and 57 assists in 396 career appearances. His year at Rangers was steady rather than spectacular, but Panathinaikos see him as a proven goalscorer who can lead their domestic and European campaigns.

Dessers’ Athens arrival means he will not join up with Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying camp as scheduled on Monday.

The Super Eagles camp has opened as Nigeria prepare to face Rwanda and South Africa in crucial World Cup qualifying games.

Captain William Troost-Ekong, goalkeeper Amas Obasogie and Olympiacos defender Bruno Onyemaechi are the first players to drop into the Super Eagles camp in Uyo.
