When you think about Nigerian stars making waves in Europe, the big leagues like the Premier League or Serie A might come to mind first. But over the years, the Danish Superliga has quietly been a springboard for some of Nigeria’s finest talents.

From powerful forwards to silky wingers, these players didn’t just show up in Denmark, they made headlines with their transfer fees and left their marks on the pitch. Footynaija.com takes a look at the top five most expensive Nigerian transfers in Danish Superliga history, and how they fared after their big moves.

5. Stephen Odey – Randers FC (€672k)

Odey arrived at Randers FC in the 22/23 season, looking to relaunch his European adventure after spells in Switzerland and France. The Nigerian striker cost the Danish side €672k, making him one of their priciest investments.

At Randers, Odey immediately impressed with his movement and work ethic. He notched 13 goals and 2 assists in his first season and has since increased that tally to 27 goals and 9 assists after four years in Scandinavia.

4. Izunna Uzochukwu – Odense BK (€700k)

Back in 2015, defensive midfielder Izunna Uzochukwu made a €700k switch to Odense BK, joining from Midtjylland where he had won the league. At Odense, expectations were high for him to anchor the midfield and bring grit to the team.

Izunna featured regularly in his first season, providing steel and ball-winning ability in the center of the park. Unfortunately, his time in Odense coincided with a tough period for the club, and despite his hard work, Odense didn’t manage to challenge for titles.

In total, he made a total of 42 appearances over three seasons and registered just one goal . Individually, he was appreciated for his commitment and leadership qualities, but his impact was more subtle than spectacular.

3. Abdul Sule – Akademisk BK (€1.2m)

Going all the way back to the 2000/2001 season, Sule’s move to Akademisk BK was groundbreaking at the time. Valued at €1.2 million, the powerful center-forward became one of the Superliga’s hottest names.

Sule didn’t disappoint. In his debut season, he bagged 11 goals in 28 games, becoming the club’s top scorer and helping Akademisk BK secure a solid mid-table finish.

Though he didn’t win any silverware during his stay, Sule’s goal-scoring prowess made him a fan favourite and cemented his place in Danish football history. His time in Denmark set the stage for a career that took him across Europe and Asia.

2. Paul Mukairu – FC Copenhagen (€1.9m)

In 2021, FC Copenhagen dipped into their wallet to bring in the versatile Mukairu from Antalyaspor for €1.9 million. Coming in as a winger with flair and pace, Mukairu was expected to light up the Parken Stadium.

However, his time with Copenhagen didn’t go according to plan on an individual note. Mukairu endured limited playing time and failed to provide any goal-mouth impact in two seasons. His haul of two Superligas and one DBU Polken will certainly serve as consolation for a disappointing stint.

1. Akinkunmi Amoo – FC Copenhagen (€4.3m)

At number one is Amoo, whose €4.3 million transfer to FC Copenhagen in the 2021 season set a record for Nigerian players in Denmark. Nicknamed the “Little Messi” back home, Amoo was signed to inject some magic into Copenhagen’s attack.

Sadly, things didn’t go as planned. Injuries and off-field issues limited his playing time, and he only made 4 appearances before his contract was terminated.

Amoo’s story is one of unfulfilled potential in Denmark, but the talent that convinced Copenhagen to spend big is undeniable. For now, fans can only wonder what could have been had he stayed fit and settled into life in Scandinavia.
