Despite finally getting full clearance from the Nigeria Football Federation to represent the Super Eagles, the Werder Bremen defender will not be part of the matchday squad when Nigeria face Ghana on Wednesday, May 28, in London, Footynaija.com reports.

Agu made the trip to London after getting the green light from Bremen coach Ole Werner. The arrangement was straightforward: no risks or unexpected moves. He was allowed to join Nigeria’s Unity Cup camp but wasn’t expected to play in any games.

As reported by DeichStube, this was confirmed by Bremen’s sporting director Clemens Fritz, who said the trip is more of a “first acquaintance” with the national team setup rather than a competitive debut.

The 25-year-old full-back was in fine form in the 2024-25 season. After recovering from injury, he became a regular for Werder Bremen, helping them finish strong in the Bundesliga.

Agu made 22 league appearances in the season, operating mostly as a left-back. He scored three goals and provided one assist, and was rated among Bremen’s most improved players by local media.

His Super Eagles call-up was celebrated back home and in Germany, but fans expecting to see him in action against Ghana will have to wait a little longer. Eric Chelle’s coaching staff reportedly want to ease him into the team structure, with a focus on long-term integration rather than an instant debut.

The Super Eagles will face Ghana in the semi-final of the Unity Cup before either a final or third-place match on Saturday, May 31. Agu is expected to remain on the sidelines for both games.
