Christiana Uzoma produced a captain’s performance as Nigeria’s Falconets defeated England 3-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, Footynaija reports.
The goalkeeper’s penalty save proved crucial after Tosin Rafiu had given Nigeria an early lead in the first half. Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamadu then scored after the break to complete a commanding win. It is Nigeria’s biggest victory over England at the World Cup finals (men or women).
Nigeria had entered the knockout stage after recovering from a 2-0 loss to Spain and a 0-0 draw with China. They sealed second place in Group F with a 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia, with Akekoromowei and Rafiu both getting on the scoresheet.
Rafiu struck early to put Nigeria ahead, but England quickly found a way back into the contest.
Rachel Maltby stepped up for a penalty, giving the Young Lionesses a chance to level the score before half-time.
Uzoma stood in the way. The Falconets captain saved Maltby’s effort to preserve Nigeria’s 1-0 advantage and send her team into the break in front.
That save changed the feel of the match. England had failed to convert its clearest opportunity, while Nigeria carried its lead into the second half.
The Falconets then attacked the game with greater confidence.
Akekoromowei doubled their advantage in the 47th minute, just two minutes after the restart. The forward had already scored against New Caledonia and now had another important knockout-stage goal.
England needed a response but could not find one as Mamadu added Nigeria’s third in the 73rd minute, ending England’s hopes and sending the Falconets into the last eight.
Nigeria’s 3-0 victory also adds to a growing tournament story. They had scored 10 goals in their final group match and followed that attacking display with a clean sheet against England.
The Falconets will now face either hosts Poland or Colombia in the quarter-finals as they continue their bid for a first U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
